Spring 2013 – Week 2

What I did this week:

  • Returned books to VPL + took out 11 more.
  • Went to downtown uni library + took out 8 books.
  • Updated Goodreads lists.
  • Uupdated paper lists.
  • Updated spreadsheet + Scrivener project.
  • Requested 6 books.
  • Skimmed ebooks; pared list; identified chapters to read.
  • Updated WorldCat lists.
  • More thinking/notetaking on my three categories. Broke lit review into three sections.
  • Arranged book references into those 3 categories.
  • Started identifying keywords/subjects (b/c it’s always best to do the last thing you need to do first!)
  • Skimmed pbooks; identified chapters to read.
  • Paid tuition.
  • Organized non-book references into the three magic categories.
  • Some of the books I requested came in; picked them up + returned a couple others.

Am super happy with my categories for a couple reasons: 1) realized how well they incorporate all aspects of my past education, and seeing as this is the capstone, that is an interdisciplinarian win.  2) when I sorted out my ref books into the 3 “piles” the three ended up about even–which tells me I’m on the right track.

Spring 2013 – Week 1

What I did this week:

  • Updated WorldCat lists + library lists.
  • Ran across a new Nicholas Carr article which led to new Pew study re: ebooks/pbooks.
  • Scanned + printed 7 books.
  • Filled in book data for 7 books.

Spring 2013 – Week 0

What I did this week:

  • Planning (aka making lists).
  • Cleared out sfu inbox.
  • Printed out list of books for library run.
  • Took out 7 more books for analysis (bringing total to 58).
  • Trekked up the mountain to the library for intro/lit review books. Eliminated some immediately (getting ruthless); brought home 13.
  • Did some thinking about intro/lit review organization. Think I’ll focus on: 1) book as object vs. book as words; 2) effect of digital shift on brain/reading; 3) effect of collaboration on writing. These seem to be the areas that come up most frequently in the “hell in a handbasket” articles.
  • Updated Goodreads lists.

This was a kind of bonus week (hence week 0). The spring semester actually started today.

Writing Goals for 2013

First, I guess I should revisit my 2012 writing goals:

Goal 1: 1hr creative writing 5x/week.

First two-thirds of the year: #fail. However, I turned this around in the last third of the year. In September, I did the TC Mini-Nano. In October, I did the 250 words a day challenge. In November, I did NaNo—I didn’t “win” but I wrote a lot. In December, I started the 500 words a day challenge and my final word count for the month was almost 19k.

Goal 2: draft of dissertation by end of year.

Argh, no. But I have made a lot of progress since September. I still hope/plan to have the thing done in 2013.

Goal 3: blog 3x/week.

Yes, check. Ok, so it wasn’t a nice M-W-F three times a week, but I posted 165! times in 2012, which works out to an average of 3.17 times / week. I’ll call this one a #win.

Goal 4: 366 project.

366 terrible haiku written. Check. And blargh. Never again.

I guess I did learn something (didn’t I already know this?): every day for a month = fun challenge. Every day for a year = enough already. My attention span rebels at the year-long challenge.

Also in 2012:

I wrote 4 articles + 2 editorials + 2 reviews for TC:

I finally bought my own domain. Professionalism!

I entered a writing contest. (I wrote something! I submitted it! #win)

I read a bunch of books. It was a pretty good reading year with only one real clunker (I’m looking at you, King of Torts). Best fiction: Ayiti. Best nonfiction: Quiet.

Onward.

Susannah Conway suggests selecting a word to represent the upcoming year. Sure, why not? So my word is…

ALOHA

Haha! Expecting something else, were you?

Aloha because it means both goodbye and hello and 2013 is a year I hope to say goodbye to some things (The Dissertation) and hello to some new things.

Aloha because it also means (amongst other things): love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathy, kindness, grace, charity. And we could all use more loving-kindness in our lives.

And aloha because Hawaii is going to be my reward to myself for finishing The Dissertation. (I have one vote for Kauai—anyone else care to weigh in?)

2013 Writing (+ Reading) Goals

  • continue with 500 words a day challenge (see sidebar)
  • write at least one essay + submit it
  • read more books, especially fiction (b/c reading novels makes me happy)
    • read some of these books + write reviews and/or interview authors
    • read some new-to-me books on writing + write an article
    • read some of these books (eventually all, but not all this year or the dissertation will never get done)
  • keep a reading journal (i.e. jot down notes/page numbers while reading so it’s easier to write about them afterward. efficiency ftw.)
  • keep on top of my book posts!
  • blog better (i.e. more posts other people might actually be interested in reading)
  • tweet about new blog posts (i.e. get over my squeamishness about self-promo)
  • work on a business plan
  • start a sketchbook
  • snail mail (admit it. you’d love to get a letter, a card, a postcard.)
  • finish The Dissertation

Fall 2012 – Week 16

What I did this week:

  • Completed 10 author pages.
  • Returned books to library. Waiting till January to pick up another batch.

Well… that’s it for the fall. I’m taking a week off. Didn’t get as much done as I’d hoped, but I suppose that’s always the case, and I’ll try not to feel discouraged about it. I am much further along than I was in September. And at least now I have a much better idea of how much work is left / how long it will take.

Fall 2012 – Week 15

What I did this week:

  • Worked through book/author spreadsheet, trying to fill in the gaps while maintaining a balance in age groups, gender, and publication years. I think this is pretty much complete. Now I just have to finish gathering the books…
  • Scanned + printed 5 chapters (total = 51!)
  • Added photos to all the author profiles.
  • Updated Goodreads & Worldcat lists.
  • Filled in book data for 8 books.
  • Filled in 2 author pages.
  • Backed up everything.

Fall 2012 – Week 14

What I did this week:

  • Registered for spring semester.
  • Looked up call numbers for research books; sorted them into: ebooks, available at SFU library, available at VPL or UBC.
  • Made note of ebook urls where available.
  • Filled in book data for 15 books.
  • Went to library, got 5 more books (was going to get more but one was the size/weight of 3 books—seriously).

Fall 2012 – Week 12

What I did this week:

  • Took a break from data collection and tackled the uber-exciting task of importing all research (except books, obvs.) to Scrivener project.
  • Tagged most of those references with keywords. (zomg! I think this might be the best thing ever. I have found a use for collections…)
  • Backed up everything to flash drive. Getting to the stage where I feel like I need multiple backups. I guess that’s a good sign.

Fall 2012 – Week 11

What I did this week:

  • Went to library, took out 10 more books.
  • Updated spreadsheet.
  • Added books to Goodreads & WorldCat (total now: 46)
  • Updated Scrivener project (added author & book pages).
  • Author list now = 34; book list now = 57 (this includes second books by authors on list that I haven’t got yet).
  • Scanned + printed 10 chapters. Expanded into second binder.
  • Completed 7 author bios.
